Hivemind

Interactive installation, Natural Interfaces, Max MSP

Hivemind is an interactive installation build for a school assignment. From a total of 14 installations Hivemind was selected to exhibit at Playgrounds 2016 Amsterdam and Breda. During this project our main focus was to design and build a device which forces the users to work together and makes them explore a theme or narrative.

This installation is about the process of losing your identity and becoming one with a collective intelligence. Using two VR-headset and a livestream participants get a Birdseye-view of the playground. By pressing buttons on the floor participants could switch off the lights displayed in the center and win the game. It's a disorientating and frustrating process which created a playful atmosphere.

During this project I was involved in conceptualizing the initial prototype and responsible for creating the video livestream. Creating this livestream was somewhat of a challenge. first prototypes were build using the app "bodyswap". We worked with 4 Samsung phones, two of them hooked up to the very top of the dome, and two in the VR-headsets. Using max-msp we developed our own software to control the game set-up on the floor.
